Learning Disorders
Dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia – difficulties with reading, math, and writing – can seriously impact a teen’s academic success. These “hidden” disabilities can be identified through a psychoeducational evaluation.

Neuropsychologist Assessment
The Forum’s assessments involve an interview with a neuropsychologist, as well as written tests that measure your child’s language, memory, attention, concentration, and learning strengths or weaknesses. These tests provide an accurate diagnosis which will allow us to tailor treatment to your teenager’s specific needs.
The impacts of learning disorders
No matter the type of learning disorder, the effects of having a learning difference can have a negative impact on both academic performance and social interactions. From an academic perspective, teens may struggle to succeed in school and could fall behind. This can lead to them being asked to repeat a grade level or participate in remedial classes. There may also be times when they are pulled from other activities, such as going to the gym or other extracurriculars, to provide them with individualized attention. While these services are beneficial for meeting academic requirements, this can feel isolating.
Treatment for Learning Differences
While school systems do offer support for those with a learning difference, this is often limited due to staffing and an inability to completely individualize content. The Forum can help fill in the gaps and provide the necessary interventions to help teens achieve academic success. Our learning disorder specialists offer services including:
- Diagnosis and Evaluation – Our diagnostic services to help you gain an understanding of the difficulties present. We know this can feel confusing, so we are available to answer any questions you may have about what this diagnosis means and what the next steps are.
- Academic Coaching – Our team tailors each session to meet specific learning needs to help teens achieve success in the classroom. Whether they need study skills or practice with a specific skill, like reading, we help teens create a toolbox of strategies to get them back on track.
- Individual Therapy – With our licensed therapists, teens process the challenges they face related to their learning disability and help them develop coping skills to manage these emotions. Through the use of different treatment models, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, family therapy, behavioral therapy, and play therapy, our mental health professionals set teens up for emotional wellness.
- Case Management – The connection to appropriate resources is crucial for successful management of a learning disorder. Our case management team will help you navigate, connect and coordinate with the variety of services available including tutors, academic support specialists, educational consultants, psychotherapists, occupational and speech therapists and more. Our network of highly credentialed specialists has been cultivated for years to help teens and families in the greater San Diego area thrive.
We give your teen the tools to succeed.
